Kenworth T680 Mirror Assembly Replacement: Video Tutorial
Side mirrors on the Kenworth T680 are exposed to constant abuse — vibration, road debris, tight loading docks, and weather. When a mirror gets damaged, replacing the entire assembly is often more cost-effective than trying to repair individual components.
Mirror Types for Kenworth T680
- Manual mirrors: Basic reflective glass with manual adjustment
- Heated mirrors: Include heating element to prevent fog and ice buildup
- Power heated mirrors: Electric adjustment with heating — the most common OEM configuration
- Chrome mirrors: Chrome-finished housings for show trucks
Tools Required
- T30 and T40 Torx bits
- 13mm socket
- Trim removal tool (plastic)
- Wire strippers and butt connectors (if rewiring)
- Thread-locking compound (Blue Loctite)
Step 1: Remove the Door Panel Access (Interior)
From inside the cab, remove the door panel trim piece that covers the mirror mounting bolts. On the T680, this is typically held by 2-3 plastic clips and one T30 Torx screw. Use a plastic trim tool to avoid scratching the interior panels.
Step 2: Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the mirror wiring harness connector inside the door. For heated/power mirrors, there will be a multi-pin connector — press the release tab firmly before pulling. For manual mirrors, skip this step.
Step 3: Remove Mounting Bolts
The T680 mirror assembly is secured with 3 bolts (typically 13mm) accessible from inside the door. Support the mirror from outside while removing the last bolt — these assemblies weigh 8-12 lbs depending on configuration.
Step 4: Install New Mirror Assembly
Apply a small amount of Blue Loctite to the mounting bolt threads. Position the new mirror assembly and start all three bolts hand-tight. Torque to 25-30 ft-lbs in a star pattern. Connect the wiring harness — you should hear the connector click into place.
Step 5: Test and Adjust
Turn on the ignition and test all mirror functions: power adjustment (up/down/left/right), heated function (wait 2-3 minutes to feel warmth), and turn signal indicator if equipped. Adjust the mirror to your driving position.
Heated Mirror Not Working? Troubleshooting
- Check the fuse: Mirror heater fuse is typically in the cab fuse panel
- Test the connector: Use a multimeter to verify 12V at the mirror connector with ignition on
- Ground issue: Clean the grounding point inside the door
- Heating element: If you have power but no heat, the element in the glass is likely bad
Mirror Maintenance Tips
To extend mirror life: periodically check mounting bolt torque (vibration loosens them), clean mirror glass with ammonia-free glass cleaner, and inspect the rubber gasket between the mirror housing and door for water intrusion.
